Why we say "No" to certain Natural Treats (And what we pick instead)

When you shop with us , you've probaly noticed that our natural treats section looks different to some others.  This is because we are incredibly picky about what makes it onto our shelves.

While items like antlers, marrow bones, deer legs and puffed treats are often labeled as "natural", this doesn't always mean they are safe or nutritious.  Here is the lowdown on why we have chosen to skip some popular items and what we recommend instead to keep your dog's tails wagging and their teeth intact.

The harder than a tooth rule.

We've seen far too many "power chewers" end up at the vet with expensive dental fractures.  the science is simple: if a treat is denser than the tooth itself, the tooth is the thing thats going to break,

  • What we avoid: Antlers, Deer legs, marrow bones
  • The risk: these items are rock solid. when a dog chomps down with their full jaw strength, the enamel can't keep up, leading to expensive and very painful slab fractures.
  • Our favourite alternatives: Lamb horns.  Unlike antlersm lamb horns are made of keratin (the same stuff as your fingernails!).  They are much more forgiving on the teeth whilst still offering a satisfying and long-lasting chew that gradually softens as your dog chews.

The truth about "puffed" treats

Puffed chicken feet or pork snouts might look clean, and smell less but that "puffed" texture comes at a cost.

  • What we avoid: Absolutely anything puffed! chicken feet, pork snouts, pig ears....
  • The "why": In order to achieve that airy, white look these items undergo an extra process to the typical air drying, and use hydrogen peroxide!  Not only does this strip away the natural colours and flavour, but also alot of the nutrients!

Our Promise to your pets

Every single product we stock is hand-selected with a "safety-first" mindset.  We loof for items that are:

  • Digestible: Easy on the tummy
  • Nutritious and minimally processed: Air-dried or dehydrated to lock in the good stuff
  • Dental friendly: Challenging enough to keep your dogs out of mischief, whilst cleaning their teeth without breaking them!
